Anniversary Clock

Anniversary clocks have become quite a popular wedding gift since the time they were copyrighted in 1901. The name is taken from the fact that these clocks can run for an entire year without having to wound. The idea is that the newly weds will only wind this clock during their wedding anniversary. Other than commemorating wedding anniversaries, these clocks serve ornamental purposes as well, often adding a timeless appeal to any room.

Origins

The clock making company Bowler & Burdock secured the copyright for the anniversary clock in 1901. These clocks also came to be popularly known as the 400 Day Clocks since it will take that many days before this type of clock will require winding. There is some controversy as to who first invented this kind of a torsion pendulum clock.

Aaron Crane secured a patent for a similar torsion pendulum clock way back in 1841 and was also called as a 400 day clock. This claim was disputed by Anton Harder, a German. Harder claims that he was the rightful inventor of the clock. Harder invented his version of the torsion pendulum clock in 1879 and got the idea for the clock’s winding mechanism as he observed how servants lighted rotating chandeliers.

Characteristics of Anniversary Clocks

These clocks usually have a crystal or glass case, which allow you to see its internal parts. They are most likely designed to be placed on a tabletop so you get to observe its rotating pendulum. Brass balls usually go around underneath the clock’s face and much of the mechanism is usually made of brass. When given as a wedding gift, the couple’s wedding anniversary will usually be engraved on it.

The key part of the clock that powers the entire mechanism is the torsion spring. This spring powers the pendulum making it rotate either clockwise or counterclockwise depending on a clock’s design. As the torsion spring twists, the gears of the clock make their miniscule turns. The clock uses very little energy thus it can run for an entire 400 days without any rewinding.

Drawbacks

In spite of being a popular and seemingly ideal wedding gift, anniversary clocks do have drawbacks. For instance, the torsion springs on this type of clock are known to be quite delicate. They are also a bit difficult to set up and poorly keep the time. This is due to the fact that the gears and springs of this clock will be affected by changes in temperature.
